Radiator valves are fittings used to control the flow of water into and out of radiators, including bathroom heated towel rails. They allow adjustment of heat output, help balance the heating system, and enable maintenance without draining the entire system.
There are several types of radiator valves. **Manual radiator valves** are turned by hand to control water flow, providing basic on/off or gradual heat adjustment. **Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)** automatically regulate the radiator temperature based on the room’s temperature, using a sensor or wax element to adjust water flow and help save energy. **Lockshield valves** are usually installed on the opposite side of the radiator from the control valve and are used to balance the heating system by regulating water flow.
Radiator valves also come in **angle and straight designs**. Angle valves change the direction of pipe flow at 90 degrees, suitable for side or bottom inlet radiators. Straight valves allow water to flow directly through the radiator in line with the pipe. Some valves on dual-fuel or electric radiators allow switching between central heating and electric elements independently.
Radiator valves are typically made from brass or chrome-plated metal for durability and corrosion resistance. Finishes include chrome, nickel, white, or black to match radiators and bathroom fittings.
Proper use of radiator valves allows control of temperature, improves energy efficiency, and ensures effective heating throughout the system. They are essential components for maintaining comfort and performance in bathrooms and other heated spaces.
